We all know that cats sleep a lot. In fact, they like it so much that they can get to sleep between 12 and 15 hours a day, even 20 hours if it is a newborn cat. It is not because cats are a lazy animal or need to sleep too much because they get tired of exercising every day.
Some reasons why cats sleep so much
One of the main reasons why the cats sleep so much is because of their efficiency as hunters. In the case of domestic cats do not need to hunt, but they do not stop having that instinct so ingrained in them.
Another reason is for survival. In the case of very small cats, it is that when they sleep, they always do it in a safe place. This allows the mother to go hunting. In addition, when cat pups sleep, they release growth hormone.
By nature, cats require many hours of sleep, especially to recover the energy spent during the day in their hunting moments. Although domestic cats do not hunt and usually have no chance of doing so, they still have this wild instinct.
Depending on their age, they can also get to sleep a lot depending on the activity they have, both day and night, although it has always been said that cats are more nocturnal than daytime.
Another reason why cats sleep so much is due to temperature. In case the temperature is low, sleep a lot help them to save energy and stay warm. Also, if they sleep in the sun, it allows them to regulate their body temperature.
Since domestic cats do not have to hunt or look for food, they can spend much more time sleeping, which they like a lot and helps them recharge their energy.
